Tips for travelling to and from Canada

Passports:

A passport is proof of citizenship that is accepted in all countries. Before you leave Canada make sure your passport is up to date and won't expire during your trip.  If you need a new passport the processing takes about 10 days for walk in's and 20 days for mail in's.  Pick up an applicaton at a post office, passport office, or online. Remeber as well that Canadian children now must have their own passport.

Health and Medical:

Do you need vaccinations? Check with your doctor before travelling to exotic international locations to see how you can protect yourself.  Also check the travel section of Health Canada website (here) to get informed.
Do you need travel insurance? Do not rely on your provincial health plan to cover your costs if something happens.  Make sure you look into any policies you might have to see what they offer and what they cover.  If you don't have an extended health travel policy, look into purchasing insurance before you leave.

Customs and Border Checks:

Remember to make sure there are no sharp objects or liquids in your carry on bag.  Trust me, it is no fun to have your sunblock, shampoo, and swiss army knive thrown away at the airport check point.  Transport Canada has good information about how to ensure your flight check-in goes smoothly.
Also, check to see what you can bring in and out of Canada at the CCRA site.  This outlines how much alcohol, tobacco, etc that can be brought back to Canada after an extended trip.

Canada Direct Phone:

This service gives access to Canadian phone operators and prices.  It can be very handy when traveling abroad. Check the site to get toll free phone numbers specific to each country.

Lots more travel information and travel tips are available at the Canadian Consular Affairs website.
